About ESOGÜ Department of Special Education

With the letter of Higher Education Council dated 08/01/2016 and numbered 75850160-104.01.02.01 / 843, the Education / Teaching / Disabled and Visually Impaired Teacher Education programs have been closed and a Special Education Teaching program has been created as a single program in the field of special education. As of the 2016-2017 academic year, the Special Education Teaching undergraduate program has been carried out at the Faculty of Education at our University. Special Education Teaching undergraduate program is carried out only as I. education and we do not have a curriculum II. education.

As there are no student admissions for the Intellectualy Disabled Teacher Education program since the 2016-2017 academic year and there is a course conflict between the new Special Education Teaching undergraduate program and the Intelelctually Disabled Teacher Education undergraduate program, double major, horizontal and central transfer procedures for all classes of the Intellectually Disabilities Teacher Education program was stopped. Double major, lateral transfer and central lateral transfer are carried out only for Special Education Teaching program.

Our primary philosophy as Special Education Teaching program is to train qualified teacher candidates in the field. Therefore, starting from the first years of the program, prospective teachers participate in the educational environments of individuals with special needs and have the opportunity to interact with these individuals and teachers of the related field. As a result of this practice, it is aimed to provide Special Education Teachers who will be trained in our faculty to gain experience in as many and different environments as possible. Thus, pre-service teachers are given the opportunity to experience the theoretical knowledge they learned in the lessons in practical life. It is thought that prospective teachers who started to interact with individuals with special needs since the first years of the program will adopt their professions better and become more competent teachers with their extensive experience.

The program includes compulsory, field knowledge, special education occupational knowledge, general culture and practical lessons. The aim of the special education teaching program is to train teachers who are equipped with theoretical and applied knowledge and skills, aiming to ensure that individuals who need special education are independent, active and productive in social life like other individuals. In addition, the program aims to produce and apply academic knowledge in the field of education of individuals with special needs.

The number of individuals in need of special education accounts for about 10% of the total population. Considering the excess of this rate, it is understood that the graduates of the program are insufficient to meet the country's needs. Graduates of special education teaching program are widely employed in Special Education Schools affiliated to MoNE and in Special Education and Rehabilitation Centers opened by private enterprises. Therefore, there is a need for graduates of the private education teacher program by the public and private sectors.

It is included in the ÖSYS Placement Guide published by ÖSYM according to which exam and score type the students will be selected for the Special Education Teaching undergraduate program. The language of the four-year undergraduate education is Turkish. The normal education period of the undergraduate program is 4 years. In order to graduate, students must take all courses in the program, complete a total of 150 credits, including 134 theoretical and 32 applications, and a GPA of at least 2.00. The special education teacher program has started to accept students since the academic year of 2016-2017. The Special Education Teaching program located in the Faculty of Education building in Eskişehir Osmangazi University Meşelik campus serves with 2 Associate Professors, 3 Doctor Faculty Members and 10 Research Assistants.

Prospective teachers who have successfully completed the program can work in schools and institutions providing services for individuals with special needs under the Ministry of National Education. In addition, in recent years, the number of private-owned rehabilitation centers has been increasing and our graduate students can work in these centers. As a result of the policy change in the field of special education in our country, the services provided to individuals with special needs have increased and the demand for special education teachers trained in this field has increased both in state institutions and private institutions.
